A burn center is a hospital unit that specializes in the care of burns and serious skin diseases. The Arizona Burn Center was founded by Dr. MacDonald Wood in 1965, and has grown from a few beds set aside for burn care, to our current, specialized unit of 19 beds all of which can be used for intensive care, if necessary.
In 1992, the Arizona Department of Health services, Division of Emergency medical Services and Health care Facilities recognized the Arizona Burn Center as a Regional Burn Center. In 2000, the Arizona Burn Center was recognized by the American Burn Association and The American College of Surgeons as a nationally verified Burn Center. This means that we have met all the required standards to be named a Burn Center, and provide the best and most progressive care available in the United States.
Recognized by the Arizona Department of Health Services, Division of Emergency Medical Services and Health Care Facilities as a Burn Center, the Arizona Burn Center at Maricopa Medical Center follows the guidelines for organizational structure, personnel, program and physical facilities as defined by the American Burn Association and the College of Surgeons. As a burn center, it is distinguished from other, nonspecific settings in which burn care is provided.
This year, the burn center celebrates it's 40th anniversary with several educational and community events being developed. Keep October 14th in your calendar and please return to this site for continuing updates.
